Exquiste in detail and craftsmanship, this Royal Doulton charger is both rare and beautiful. If features a color portrait of Samuel Johnson (1709 - 84), the son of a country bookseller. He was one of the leading literary figures best known as the compiler of the first major dictionary of the English language. He founded a club which included painter Joshua Reynolds, philospher Edmund Burke, and poet Oliver Goldsmith. The club met at various coffee-houses and inns including the "Cheshire Cheese", which still stands in Fleet Street, London. Excellent condition.
